Millennials are having an impact on corporate training

We are seeing a shift in corporate training – less tradition classroom and more online, do it at your own pace, on your own time kind of training. We have the millennials to thank for this!

Millennials have finally surpassed the baby boomers! This group is a determined bunch who are eager to succeed and extremely tech savvy. Being that they are the future of a company’s success, are organizations prepared for the high level of career development this generation demands?

Millennials grew up in a technological world. It was a must to have a computer in the home for homework, everything had to be typed up, no more writing assignments and papers by hand. They are connected 24/7 to information and social media. Millennials are influencing they way organizations deliver their corporate training. Research shows that the average "millennial employee under the age of 25 expects to find a virtual learning platform in the work environment."

As mentioned, millennials are eager, they want to move up that corporate ladder and they want to do it fast! They want to be able to work while at the same time gaining those career development skills needed to move up that ladder. E-Learning does that for them. It allows them to work at their own pace, learning bits and pieces of information in small chunks and being able to take what they have learned and incorporate it into their daily working lives.

We all know that e-Learning is quickly growing, at rapid speed nonetheless! But there are still people who are skeptical about making the switch from the classroom to online. Some think its too expensive or it is difficult to learn. Hearing these sorts of things might turn you off from incorporating e-Learning into your organizations training and development.

You don’t need to know how to code or use complex software – today’s e-Learning platforms offer easy web-based interfaces you can use to build e-Learning in the cloud.

3. It’s Impossible To Track

Reporting is usually a central feature of most modern e-Learning platforms and can usually be done quickly.

Most platforms will let you track how many learners have enrolled and completed your courses and what grade they got in their assessments. The bottom line is you can definitely find an e-Learning platform that will allow you to track the data you need to measure the success of your project!

Some innovative ways to reinforce key concepts in online training

With such a fast paced society that we live in, our minds are always in overdrive. This can leave little, maybe even no room, for short-term memory with it comes to developing our skills, specifically for online training. We need to make sure that we are reinforcing the key concepts to the learner throughout your e-learning course. By doing this it will help the learner to remember the key facts, to help them increase their knowledge and skills.

So how can we incorporate creative ways that will help the learner reinforce key concept from their online training? Here are some examples you could use.

Have you attended a BORING webinar?

The kind that you can "really" be checking your e-mail while "attending"? Or even worse, have you led one like that???

Here are some "do's" to keep in mind the next time you design a webinar:

- Have an agenda with clear timelines WRT to how you will cover content
- Pace yourself - 100 words per minute is optimal
- For each slide...30 second minimum; 2 minute maximum
- Have another presenter logged in to respond to texted questions (in the chat box) as well as any technical issues that learners run into
- Allow space for learners to share their examples
- Use the annotation tools often and in meaningful ways
- Use polls and feedback tools
- SMILE - regardless of whether or not you are using your webcam
- Have a printed copy of your presentation in front of you (just in case)
- Have a glass of water handy
- Upload or distribute learner handouts in advance of the webinar

And remember - enthusiasm is contagious...and so is boredom!
